Click here for information about our next planting or join our mailing list by clicking here September 28th 2002 is a day that fish should mark on their calendars. It is on this is the day that we created homes for more than 849,60,000 fish. So, on behalf of all the fish in the Banana River I want to thank all of you who came out to help us plant more than 8496 red mangroves. this brings our total to 19,217 plants planted this year. These mangroves were planted along the 528 causeway in Cape Canaveral as part of a mangrove restoration project for the Canaveral Port Authority. The Port Authority has done some great work restoring this area by removing the invasive trees from this site and planting numerous black and white mangroves. The only part of this project that was needed was for us to replenish the shoreline with red mangroves. Thanks to all those who gave of their time and energy. We had planed on planting 5000 mangroves and ended up with our largest planting to date. If you would like to be involved in our next restoration project click here for more info. Why we plant mangroves The Red mangrove, (Rhizophora mangle) is one of Floridas most vital native trees. In addition to providing a home in their roots, the leaves of the red mangrove play an important part in the nutrient cycles of the lagoon. Within 36 hours of a mangrove leaf falling into the water, it becomes part of the food chain where microscopic sea creatures feed on them. Some of the nutrients for these trees have even been found as far out as the Atlantic coral reefs. If you would like more information about mangroves check out my mangrove pageAlong Florida's Space Coast less than 1/3rd of the mangroves that once grew here remain. Fortunately with the new laws that have been put in place by the FDEP these trees are now protected and their numbers are starting to grow. However for their numbers to reach what they once were it will take a little help from us. Second Annual Anglers Mangrove Festival On Saturday, May 5th CCA-Orlando held our 2nd Annual Angler's Mangrove Festival at Manatee park in Cape Canaveral. This event was a huge success as well as an educational and satisfying event for all those who participated. This year we planted 3450 red mangroves. If all of these plants survive they will become homes for 34,500,000 fish over the 20 years. I would like to say a special thanks to all of those who made this one of the best planting I have every been a part of. You did a great job and I hope you will come out again in the fall for our next planting. All of the mangroves planted at this event where acquired through our 2nd Annual Propagule Collection Contest. This is a contest held between local High Schools with the proceeds form our Trout/Redfish Tournament going to the winner.
First Annual Anglers Mangrove Festival On the 29th April 2000 Indian River Adventures in cooperation with the Central Florida Chapter of CCA-Florida, Larry Webber with Keep Brevard Beautiful and the city of Cape Canaveral hosted a mangrove planting at Manatee Park in Cape Canaveral. The event lasted from 9am till 12pm. Our goal was to plant 1,000 red mangroves that are being provided by Tom Stewart and his class from Rockledge High School. Instead we planted 2,000 red mangroves. Each mangrove will be the home to over 10,000 fish during its lifetime of 20+/- years. That means we made homes for 20,000,000 fish. Pictures of our Planting 2000 Thanks for all your hard work. We'll do it again next year.
