Flats Report for Cocoa Beach & Titusville areas
Summary
I think spring has finally arrived in Cocoa Beach. The bait is finally starting to show up in the water temperatures have finally got above 70°. The fishing is starting to pick up some of the big schools of redfish haven't shown up yet. The good news is the tarpon and snook fishing has been pretty good over the past few months and should get better now that the glass minnows have shown up. Most days flyfishing is still been the way to go but now the mullet are starting to show up the should all change soon. When it does if it's anything like last year sharpen your hooks on your top water plugs because they were blasting them out of the water.
Redfish
The red fishing continues be on off. Some days were finding schools that will
eat everything we throw at them and others we work to find singles that'll play
with us. The water has been extremely clear making the redfish spooky. The good
news is with all the win that we've had and has provided some camouflage for us
on most days. On the calmer days I try to keep the sun in my face so that I'm
not casting a shadow across the flats letting the redfish know that I'm there.
On fly we've had our best luck with light-colored or white bunny Clouser Minnows
without any flash. The trick has been to let the fish find the fly rather than
the firefly finding the fish. When the water is clear like it is right now I
also prefer to fish with at least a 12 foot leader so the fish don't see my fly
line.
We haven't been able to get a redfish to take a top water plugs yet but that
should be about to change here real soon now the big fish of showing up. We've
had our best luck with natural looking swim baits and twitch baits. On days when
the blowfish are too bad we been able to pick up a few fish using light-colored
soft plastics like Bass assassins in DOA's.
Trout
The trout fishing has been slow Cocoa Beach compared to last year. Hopefully with the spawn coming that will all change. With all the rain we've had over the past couple weeks the salinity in the river is dropped quite a bit this means that when the trout do begin to spawn most likely they'll move into very shallow water to lay their eggs. One of my tricks for finding the spawning fish is to look for schools of big mullet near or around shallow grass flats. This also means when choosing lures you may want to go with some of your larger baits. When these girls move up on the flats they don't want to expend a lot of energy looking for food and they also want to get the most bang for their buck when it comes to what they eat. With this in mind throwing a two or 3 inch top water plugs will produce fewer and smaller trout compared to fishing with larger 4 to 6 inch plugs. Unlike the redfish trout have incredible vision and able to see you for a way so you want to make a long cast when fishing from a boat.
Tarpon
The Tarpon fishing has been pretty good this year on fly but we should start picking up some on spinning now that the mullet are starting to show up. So far on fly this year our best catches have come on tan or light brown sexy sliders in a number 2 to 4 hook size. If it's anything like last year no debates moving in we should be able to start throwing top water flies like poppers and bubble heads.
When it comes to spinning once debate starts to move around the docks in the early mornings I would start throwing plugs like Highroller
's 2 1/4 inch Pop Roller with a redhead. Over the past few years we've caught more Tarpon and snook on this top water plug than anything else I have ever thrown at them. If you can't find them in your local tackle shop go to www.hroller.com.Other stuff
Autism Support
As many of you know I have been working with a Autism Support Group here in Central Florida for some time now. I have set up an account where I will donate a porsion of all my charters to Autism Caregivers Connect. They are a local autism support group that helps families and children with autism. If you would like more information about this support group please go to their website at www.ACCBrevard.org.
Inox Lubes
As a few of you know from time to time I find a new product that I fall in love. Well I have found on that everyone needs. Inox. If your alive and do anything this is a product you will have a use for. It does everything from liberate to stop corrosion. I have used it on my boat, reels, fly line (the best dressing I have ever used), trailer, electrical, garbage disposal, electric razor, fans, lights, wheel bearings, guns and anything else that will sit still long enough. The two best things about it is how long it lasts and that it is a green product. None of their products are made from petroleum and won't harm the environment. Inox has been around for over 20 years in Australia but has only been here in the US for a few months.
Lanyards
Many of you have asked me over the years about the Fishing Lanyard I wear. I have started making them for the Fly Fisherman and they now have them in both stores. These make a great gift for the fisherman that has everything else. I now also have them on my website at this link Fishing Lanyards.
until next time.....
Get out there and catch a memory.
