Flats Report for Cocoa Beach & Titusville areas
January 24th 2010 fishing report by Capt Doug Blanton
Summary
Every time I hear or see anything that has to do with a natural event all we hear is doom and gloom. The latest event to hit the Space Coast is some cold weather. When this colder weather hit we had a fish kill. A fantastic fish kill. So what was so good about dead fish? It was the fish it killed. Mostly blowfish and catfish. This could be one of the best things that has happened to Cocoa Beach in years. I spent 4 days on the water this week catching reds on the flats with soft plastics and didn't lose a single tail. You couldn't do that a few weeks ago.
So how is the fishing after this natural disaster? GREAT! We are catching some nice reds up to 30 pounds on grubs and winter tarpon on fly. Most mornings we have been polling onto the flats and the reds are already tailing away looking for breakfast. Letter in the afternoons we have been finding good number of small tarpon working the mangroves looking for lunch.
Redfish
You got to love winter time reds. You have a few schools here and there but more than anything you have small groups of spooky fish holding in a few inches to a foot of water. So what makes this so much fun? These conditions are what set sight fishermen apart from other fishermen. The stealthy approach and the perfect cast. Or in many cases the stealthy approach and the blow out. But don't worry, you just move on to the next one. That is the only thing I like about winter. It makes fishing reds more like fishing Bonefish.
All of the redfish we have been finding have been in less than a foot of water on flats with a lot of grass. There hasn't been a lot of bait on the flats after this last cold front so the reds have been finding most of their meals hiding in the grass. All of the reds we have gotten to eat have been caught on small soft plastics like Bass Assassins Blurps in Electric Chicken or Drunk Monkey. All have been caught working it at a crawl and letting the fish find the lure. This brings up one of my most important rules for fishing reds. Let the fish find the lure not the lure find the fish. If you can set up casts like this you will find you will put a lot more fish in the boat.
Trout
The trout fishing in Cocoa Beach is slow at best. I should have better news on my next report.
Tarpon
I know when most people think of cooler water tarpon is never a fish people think about and for good reason. When the water cools off the tarpon head south. The thing that most don't know is that some of the juveniles don't go south but move into deeper water. So what you end up with is a good amount of these fish in small areas. the main problem is there isn't a lot of bait and the bait that is there is real small, glass minnow small.
Our best catches have come on fly. Over the years has been on small EP glass minnow. However this year has been a little different. We are doing good on some days with the EP Minnows but we have had more good days with small white Clousers without any flash.
On spinning we have done pretty good over the years with Yozuri's 3D fingerling. It is a small twitch bait that tarpon love.
Other stuff
As a few of you know from time to time I find a new product that I fall in love. Well I have found on that everyone needs. Inox. If your alive and do anything this is a product you will have a use for. It does everything from liberate to stop corrosion. I have used it on my boat, reels, fly line (the best dressing I have ever used), trailer, electrical, garbage disposal, electric razor, fans, lights, wheel bearings, guns and anything else that will sit still long enough. The two best things about it is how long it lasts and that it is a green product. None of their products are made from petroleum and won't harm the environment. Inox has been around for over 20 years in Australia but has only been here in the US for a few months. I loved it so much I have started to rep for their US distributor. If you want more info on their products click here.
For those of you wanting to put together a trip to this area my wife is now booking hotel rooms for my clients. She can get you a rate as good as any of the online sites and knows what places are nice and the ones you want to stay away from. There is no charge for this service and she can book any hotel you want. She also does airline tickets, car rentals and cruises
Many of you have asked me over the years about the Fishing Lanyard I wear. I have started making them for the Fly Fisherman and they now have them in both stores. These make a great gift for the fisherman that has everything else. I now also have them on my website at this link Fishing Lanyards.
until next time.....
Get out there and catch a memory.
